Starting Point

The trail begins in the alpine resort village of Kühtai, at the base of the ski lifts. From here, you’ll follow a relatively direct path up the ski slope – this is the steepest section of the route, but it’s short and manageable. Once at the top, the rest of the hike is fairly gentle and enjoyable.

Route Highlights

Drei-Seen-Hütte and Kühtai Sign

As you ascend, you’ll reach a plateau where the ski slope path meets access roads that criss-cross the area. These lead you to the Drei-Seen-Hütte, a mountain hut offering refreshments and a great place to pause. Nearby is a unique Kühtai sign that doubles as a sculpture and playground – a fun photo opportunity for all ages.

Unterer & Oberer Plenderlessee

Just a short walk from the hut brings you to the first of the lakes – Unterer Plenderlessee, with its crystal-clear turquoise waters. A little higher up is Oberer Plenderlessee, both framed by rugged alpine scenery. These two lakes are often still surrounded by patches of snow well into summer and are quite chilly – brave swimmers may want to take a dip, but be prepared for a brisk experience!

Mittlerer Plenderlessee

From the hut, the path loops back and begins to descend gently toward the Gaiskogelbahn top station. Just past this point lies Mittlerer Plenderlessee, a slightly more secluded lake, making it an ideal spot for a quiet rest or cold swim. You may encounter grazing sheep in this area, adding to the alpine charm.

Hirschebensee

The final lake on the route is Hirschebensee, reached by a winding single-track trail that drops elevation quickly through scenic switchbacks. This is the warmest and most inviting of the lakes, with shallower edges allowing the sun to gently warm the water. It's a perfect spot for a relaxing break, with lovely views of Pirchkogel and surrounding peaks.

Final Descent

The last leg of the hike is a mellow descent back into Kühtai, cutting across open ski slopes with wide views and easy terrain. This final stretch is gentle on the knees and suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
